McDougald Just Short Of Port Angeles Repeat - |
Port Angeles, Washington –9-06-2008 – The #68 HayWire Motorsports / KMB Design Groups / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Mauritsen Enterprises Toyota Camry came up just short of pulling off a repeat win in the Limited Late Model Racing Series return trip to Port Angeles Speedway, Saturday, September 6th, 2008. Returning to Port Angeles Speedway as the defending race winner, “Terrible” Tim McDougald was looking to once again place his #68 Toyota Camry in the winners circle at the little 1/4mile track on the Olympic peninsula. But defending LLMRS champion John Boyatt would have other plans. Qualifying found the #68 KMB Design Groups / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Mauritsen Enterprises Toyota Camry return to the Trophy Dash after missing only 1 so far this season. Boyatt would have the pole for the Dash. After a hard fought 4 laps Boyatt would edge McDougald by mere inches at the line. “We knew it would be a tough one with John on the pole,” said driver “Terrible” Tim McDougald, “I don’t know what happened in qualifying, but he’s faster than that, so I knew it would be hard. You have to ask yourself, ‘how hard do you want to race for a dash’?” McDougald wasted little time after the Trophy Dash serving notice to those in attendance as he took the lead in the Heat Race on lap 4 and never looked back, taking the win in dominant fashion. “The car was good, my crew never stops working on it,” said McDougald. “It was good to get the win there, we needed the points. This points battle is getting very tight and we’re running out of time.” The Main Event saw McDougald start from the number 4 spot, while the #10 of Boyatt was given the front row. Boyatt wasted no time taking the lead and setting sail while McDougald began his charge through the pack to take chase of the race and points leader. After several laps of serving notice to Boyatt that he was not giving up, McDougald made the move on lap 9 going into turn 3. But Boyatt moved to block and the two spun. Per LLMRS rules, McDougald was sent to the back of the pack, while Boyatt was given his spot at the lead back. The fans were stunned, the crews were bewildered, but McDougald was focused. Going back to green flag conditions with only 40 laps left, McDougald began what would be an impressive drive as he came from that last place spot back to second, running down the leader and catching him with 6 laps to go. Fortunately for Boyatt, McDougald had used up his tires catching him, and the last 6 laps was spent with McDougald paying notice to Boyatt with several nudges that he was back and waiting for the mistake. With the crowd on their feet, McDougald fell just short of the repeat win, crossing the finish line second, just inches behind Boyatt. “I’m pretty happy with that run,” said McDougald, “I can’t tell you how bad I wanted to win that one. I’m not sure why John got to start on the front row. The rule is the last race winner starts last. If he was given the points for the win in Yakima, he should have started this one in the back. This place is special to me for some reason. Every time I come here I feel like I can win. I really can’t put it into words how bad I wanted this one. But we’ll take the finish and move on. It was a good points day for us. We’re holding down that second spot in the Championship. With one race left we’re in good shape there. I really wish I could have won this one, but we’ll try harder for this last one. I have to thank my guys, they made some great adjustments. We were definitely the fastest car tonight, I think we showed that by coming from the back like that. I’m not sure why John wasn’t sent back there with me, but that was the call. Some times you just have to get back to work and forget about it. Looks like John caught a lot of lucky brakes, and I made one mistake that cost us the win. But after a hard earned third in Yakima and this finish here, I think we have a lot of momentum going into that final race. I’m looking forward to capping this season off with one more win.” Look for the #68 KMB Design Groups / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Mauritsen Enterprises Toyota Camry to put on one last display as the HayWire Motorsports team look to close out the 2008 LLMRS season. And be sure to catch the #92 RPM Sales & Service / Old West Graphics / Ringers Gloves / KMB Design Groups / Mauritsen Enterprises Pontiac Grand Prix on the Whelen All-American series schedule at Evergreen Speedway. |
